Many gardeners consider red currants to be the queen of berries, and for good reason. After all, its fruits have healing properties and are considered a source of health.

Due to the high content of pectin, currant berries are still used in folk medicine to cleanse the body of toxins, in the treatment of diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, to reduce the development of various kinds of inflammatory processes and neoplasms.

However, like any garden plant, red currants require some care and attention. This shrub is perennial, reaches a height of about 1.5 meters, grows and bears fruit for up to 25 years. The flowering period of red currants begins around the second half of May and lasts 6-12 days.

Ripening of berries begins in late June or mid-July, while it all depends on weather conditions. It is not very demanding for watering, but it is a light-loving shrub that requires regular pruning and thinning. In addition to high yields, red currants are also considered a frost-resistant crop.

Diseases and pests of red currant

Fungal and viral diseases are most typical for red currant bushes. Let's consider the most common ones:

  • reversion (terry) of currants;
  • anthracnose;
  • goblet rust;
  • septoria;
  • spherotek.

Reverse currant refers to viral diseases and is found mainly in black currant shrubs, but recently there have been cases of red currant disease. The causative agent of this disease (kidney mite) is introduced mainly along with infected planting material.

The symptoms of the disease are flowers with needle-like purple petals, they look unnaturally double (curly). There is practically no ovary on such bushes. The disease is transmitted from bush to bush over several years.

Anthracnose - a sign of the disease is the presence of dark brown spots of indeterminate forms. In a neglected form, the leaves dry up and the yield of the shrub sharply decreases.

Goblet rust - fungal disease. Diseased leaves partially change their natural color to orange, and subsequently fall off. At the same time, the fruits become underdeveloped.

Septoria- also applies to fungal diseases. It manifests itself in the first summer month - currant leaves are covered with round gray spots with a dark brown edging. After a while, traces of black specks (mushroom fruits with spores) appear on the spots. If during the time you do not take measures to combat this disease, all the leaves of the bush will dry out and fall off.

Spheroteka- this disease covers the entire bush at once, it becomes covered with a white bloom, which eventually becomes dark brown. As a rule, the plant dies completely.

Pest and disease control of red currant

The most productive way to combat various diseases of red currants is to influence the shrub with fungicides, pesticides and garlic solutions.

In severe cases, the treatment is repeated throughout the summer season. Many gardeners in their practice are faced with the appearance of red spots on currant leaves. Therefore, below we will consider in more detail what the appearance of these spots is connected with, and how they can be cured.

There are red spots on the leaves of the currant. What to do?

Very often, anthracnose is determined by such symptoms - this is a common disease of red currants, which is caused by fungi of the genus Gloeosporium. The consequences of this disease are:

  • decrease in the growth of shoots;
  • a sharp decrease in sugar content;
  • significant decrease in yield.

Signs of anthracnose: small red spots that can grow in size and merge over time. Spots that have changed their color to brown over time may indicate a deep stage of the disease. The progression of the disease occurs mainly in the rainy summer period, as it is spread by raindrops and insects. A favorable environment for the development of the disease is considered to be high humidity - 90% and temperatures above 22 ºС.

As a rule, there is no immunity to anthracnose in plants. As methods of treatment, it is necessary to use for spraying before bud break (in early spring): copper sulfate or nitrafen. Also used: chomycin, colloidal sulfur, 1% Bordeaux liquid, phthalan.

Subsequent spraying is carried out after a two-week break from the moment of harvesting. It is also advisable to burn all the affected parts of the plant in the autumn-winter period, and dig up the soil twice: in late autumn and spring. Since it is in the ground that spores of fungi continue to inhabit. If red spots reappear the next year, the treatment of the shrub must be repeated.

As a radical measure, the bushes are sprayed with boiling water in early spring before the budding period. This method has been repeatedly tested in practice by many gardeners and confirms its effectiveness in the fight against anthracnose. In addition to anthracnose, red spots can also be caused by gall aphids. It settles on the leaves of a bush and gradually sucks out all its juices.

One of the popular methods that is effective in combating this phenomenon is the use of a solution of laundry soap. In this case, be sure to keep in mind that aphids are mainly located on the back, lower side of the sheet, so treat these places with the greatest care. Sick shoots and leaves must be cut and burned.

According to the reviews of experienced gardeners, the process of pollination of the affected shrub with tobacco dust, cinnamon or onion husk infusion helps in the fight against aphids. Although the latter method is the least effective. It can only be used in the very early stages of bush disease.

But some gardeners successfully use garlic infusions, with which they treat the affected areas of red currants. In any case, with careful care, the red currant will "repay" you with its increased yield and large juicy berry.
