At the moment, there are many devices aimed at facilitating the work of agronomists. Peat tablets are one such facilitating invention.

They allow you to grow seedlings with less effort, which will have a high survival rate in the open field and a rich harvest.

In the article we will tell you in detail about planting tomato seeds for seedlings in peat tablets, how to use them. You will also learn how to care for the seeds and replant them if necessary.

What it is?

In fact, this is ordinary peat, pressed into a washer and placed in bags of non-woven material. They are designed for growing seedlings, as well as rooting cuttings.

For your information... In addition to the main component - peat - the tablets also include other components: humus, nutrients, growth stimulants and elements that fight against bacteria.

Pros and cons of this method of growing tomatoes

The advantages of using this method include the following factors:

  • planting seeds is quick and effortless;
  • the risk of infection of seeds with fungal infections is significantly reduced;
  • the growth stimulants and microelements present in the "washer" make it possible to accelerate the process of growth and development of seedlings;
  • the process of planting seedlings in open ground is facilitated, so that the seedlings are not damaged;
  • after moving the tomatoes to a permanent place, even the weakest root system will be able to grow through the thin mesh of the tablet;
  • the agronomist is exempt from preparing the soil mixture;
  • even the smallest and weakest seeds germinate in such a tablet;
  • there is no need for additional dressings at the initial stages;
  • peat has good air circulation.

Despite the huge list of benefits of planting in peat tablets, this method has its drawbacks.:

  • The high cost of the tablets themselves. The price of one is 4-5 rubles. And if you take into account that each seed will need a separate "house", then you can calculate that the amount will be spent on pills.
  • The importance of constant control of the moisture content of the washer, as the peat dries very quickly and becomes quite hard. At the same time, if the peat is too wet, there is a risk of mold growth, which will destroy the seeds.
  • Large amounts of tablets take up a lot of space, which is especially important in a small apartment.
  • The inability to put the "washers" close to each other, as they require constant ventilation.

How to choose the right "puck"?

  • It is necessary to give preference to tablets with soft peat, since coarse peat will not allow young roots to germinate.
  • Pay attention to the acidity of the substrate. It can be both high and almost neutral. For tomatoes, the most appropriate neutral level. To find out about this characteristic, it is enough to carefully consider the packaging - it always indicates the acidity level.
  • For tomatoes, you need to purchase a large tablet. The most optimal diameters are 41, 42, 44 mm.
  • There are two options for tablets - with and without special meshes. Those with such casings are slightly more expensive, but they are impregnated with a fungicide, which is additional protection for the seedlings. Therefore, it is better to overpay a little and buy coated tablets.

reference... Buy a peat tablet from any store that specializes in selling flowers or seeds.

How to cook properly?

  1. It is necessary to pick up any shallow container that will serve as a pallet.
  2. Place tablets in it so that the seed recess is on top.
  3. It is necessary to moisten the substrate with settled water at room temperature. Moreover, it is not necessary to water the peat immediately; it must be done gradually, over several hours. Thus, the moisture is evenly distributed over the tablet, and the agronomist will be able to see how much liquid is needed so that later he does not have to squeeze the tablet.

Or you can just put all the tablets in a container of water for about a third of an hour. During this period of time, the "washers" should increase by about 5 times. But at the same time, they will not lose their shape, since they are protected by a special mesh. If excess water appears in the pan, it must be drained.

Seeds can be bought at the store, or you can prepare them in advancecollecting from their last year's fruits.

Step-by-step instructions for disembarkation

  1. Sowing is carried out one seed in each tablet, for this there are special holes. You need to deepen the seeds by about two sizes of the seed itself.
  2. It is advisable to sprinkle the seeds with a small layer (about 1-2 mm) of ordinary peat.
  3. After that, the containers with the planted seeds are covered with foil or glass. Such a manipulation will speed up the germination of seeds.
  4. The "pucks" are placed in a well-lit place.
  5. The seeds should be kept warm, but they should not be placed near heating appliances. In this case, the film must be opened every day for 30-60 minutes to allow the seeds to breathe.

There is no need to water the seeds immediately after planting, since before that we moistened the peat well.

How do I care for my seeds?

The main thing is not to forget about the daily airing of the seedlings. And also monitor the state of moisture in peat (it dries out faster than conventional soils), especially on sunny days. Otherwise, the tablets may dry out and the seeds may die.

There are several ways to moisten the substrate.:

  • spraying from a spray bottle - suitable for those cases when the sprouts have not yet sprouted or they are too weak;
  • through the pallet - settled water is poured into it, and after half an hour the remaining liquid is necessarily drained so that the peat does not become moldy.

As soon as the first shoots appear, the glass or other coating is removed. Otherwise, the care does not change in any way after the appearance of the first shoots. Also 15-20 days after the seeds have sprouted, the tomatoes need to be fertilized... Complex liquid fertilizers, which are simply added to the water during irrigation, are suitable for this.

To understand that the seedlings are ready for transplanting into open ground, it is enough to look at the root system of the seedlings - it should completely take the pill.

Seedlings grown in this way do not need picking, it can be immediately transferred to a permanent place. It is very important not to wait out the planting of tomatoes, because otherwise the roots will grow too quickly and intertwine with each other. By doing this, they greatly complicate the process of seating.

Attention! Since seeds in peat tablets grow a little faster than in ordinary soil, the sowing material should be sown a little later. This will protect the seedlings from overgrowth and stress.

How to transplant?

There are no difficulties in this process. It is enough just to make its own hole for each tablet, the diameter of which will be several centimeters larger than the “washer” itself. Then place the tablet in the ground. You need to dig a hole to such a depth that the entire tablet will fit in there, and there is still a little room for the top layer.

Even if the tablet has a protective mesh, it does not need to be removed, since such a shell will dissolve in the soil in a few days. Immediately after planting, the soil must be well moistened. And then care for the tomatoes in the usual way.

Peat tablets are becoming more and more popular among agronomists. Indeed, when using them, the vegetable grower saves his time and effort, moreover, when transplanted into open ground, the root system is not damaged, which is very important for obtaining a rich harvest.
