Ginger is an exotic plant that has become part of our life. It is already difficult to imagine a confectionery delicacy or a meat culinary masterpiece without this spice.

It turns out that this root is easy to grow with your own hands, even in the country or in the garden in any way, including when it has already sprouted.

Can it be grown outdoors?

The homeland of ginger is India, a country with a tropical and subtropical climate. It is natural that the root will be able to grow at high temperatures and high humidity. Such conditions on a personal plot in open ground can be provided only in the southern regions of Russia.

In northern latitudes, cultivation is also possible, but in greenhouses or on a windowsill, which will extend the growing season of the plant.

We talked about growing ginger in the open field in central Russia here.

Outdoor varieties

Currently, about a thousand varieties of spices are known. All of them differ in the type of inflorescences, in the color of the flower, but the taste does not differ significantly. But The following types of ginger are traditionally distinguished:

When to plant in the country?

The ripening period for ginger root is 8 - 10 months. Therefore, in order to harvest root crops planted in open ground in September - October, you need to plant ginger in late January - early March.

A more accurate planting time must be determined taking into account the geographical latitude: in the south of the country, the crop can be harvested in October - November, therefore, the plant should be planted in March, and in the central part - only in January - February, since the first frosts will not make it possible to "hold »Plant outdoors until October.

Residents of these regions can do differently: with the onset of cold weather, dig up the root together with an earthen lump and plant it in a barrel or other bulk container, transfer it to a warm room and continue the spice cultivation period until next spring.

If ginger is planned not to be planted on a personal plot, but to be grown in a room, then it can be planted at any time of the year.

How to do it correctly?

  1. Prepare inventory. To plant ginger in open ground, you will need a shovel, a watering can, and for sowing seeds and for germinating a root crop - containers: a container 8 - 10 cm high and not deep, but a wide pot. All containers must be disinfected by wiping them with a sponge soaked in alcohol.
  2. Choose a place. For ginger, a place protected from the wind and well-lit is suitable, but without direct sunlight (if this is not possible, then shading should be provided in the midday heat). He will feel good in partial shade, where the soil is constantly in a slightly moist state, but the proximity of groundwater to the surface should be excluded.
  3. Preparing the land for planting. The root will need a loose, nutritious, breathable and drained soil. Most often, summer residents mix 2 parts of leaf humus, 1 part of sand, 1 part of peat and 1 part of sod land. It is possible, when digging a site for the winter, to add mineral fertilizers and rotted manure to the soil.
  4. Planting material. The main breeding method for ginger is by dividing the rhizome. You can buy ginger root tubers at a garden center or an online store that sells only certified products. When buying a root in a store, there is a high risk that it will not germinate. When purchasing a root crop, you should pay attention to its appearance (fresh, smooth, elastic, glossy, golden brown), to the presence of an “eye” (shoot buds), and the absence of any defects.

The average price for a ginger root vegetable in Moscow is from 200 rubles per kilogram, in St. Petersburg - from 240 rubles per kilogram.

Seed propagation is a long and laborious process. It is almost impossible to find quality seeds, but sometimes they can be found in specialized or online stores. Pricing policy: Moscow - from 140 rubles for 10 seeds, St. Petersburg - from 150 rubles. for 10 seeds.

Seed propagation

  1. For sowing seeds you will need: a shallow wide container (8 - 10 cm), soil, drainage, film (glass), seeds, a spray bottle.
  2. The soil and seeds should be disinfected: the soil should be thermally treated (30 minutes in the oven at a temperature of + 180C - + 200C), the seeds should be soaked in Fitosporin solution for 30 minutes.
  3. Fill a layer (1 cm) of drainage at the bottom of the container, then - the soil.
  4. Moisten the soil well with a spray bottle.
  5. Spread ginger seeds over the surface of the substrate at a distance of 3 - 5 cm, lightly sprinkle with soil or sand (no more than 0.5 cm).

Reproduction by root tubers

  1. It is necessary to prepare: root crop, pot (shallow but wide), soil, knife, potassium permanganate, activated carbon (ash), drainage, sand.
  2. The root tuber must be disinfected by washing it with a solution of potassium permanganate (1 gram per 100 ml of water) or soaked in a weak solution of Fitosporin for 30 minutes, the soil for the pot must be thermally treated or spilled with fungicides.
  3. Parts of the root should be immersed in warm water overnight to "wake up" the kidneys.
  4. For germination, the root can be placed in a plastic bag and laid out in a bright place.
  5. The root crop already with sprouted "eyes" must be cut into segments (5 - 8 cm), each of which must have at least 2 buds (eyes).
  6. Places of cuts must be treated with wood ash or sprinkled with crushed activated carbon.
  7. The pot must be filled with drainage (1/3 of the volume) and soil (2/3 of the volume).
  8. The root (shoots up) is buried in half, then it is completely covered with earth (2-3 cm), the top layer of which is compacted by hand. Water abundantly.

Rooting a sprouted store plant

Consider whether it is possible to plant a root if it has already sprouted, and how to do it correctly.

  1. It is necessary to prepare the plant, shovel, watering can, drainage, sand.
  2. In the spring, the germinated plant is transferred to open ground. A two-centimeter layer of drainage (expanded clay, gravel, etc.) and a two-centimeter layer of coarse sand should be poured into the dug planting hole (20 cm), only then the substrate layer can be filled.
  3. The soil in the hole must be shed well. Allow the water to absorb.
  4. The plant is transplanted together with an earthen clod.
  5. The resulting voids are covered with soil, gently pressing it against the trunk for fixation.

Primary care

For seedlings

  1. After sowing, the container should be tightened with foil (covered with glass) and placed in a bright and warm place (+ 23C - + 25C).
  2. Every day, polyethylene needs to be slightly opened for ventilation and irrigation from the substrate spray bottle.
  3. After the emergence of seedlings (after 2 - 4 weeks) the film is removed, the seedlings are regularly watered (once every 1-2 days) and shaded in case of bright sunlight hitting them.
  4. With the appearance of the first true leaf, it is necessary to make a pick, planting seedlings in individual pots.

In a pot

  1. After planting, the pot should be placed in a warm place (not lower than + 20C). The place should be bright, but not in direct sunlight, so a south window will not work.
  2. Watering is carried out regularly, the topsoil should always be in a moist state, but stagnation of water should not be allowed.
  3. A week before the planned planting in open ground, the seedlings should be "hardened": they should be taken out into the fresh air, first for 1.5 hours, then for 5 - 6 hours.

In the open ground

  1. The first time after planting ginger in open ground, watering should be carried out often, but at the same time, avoiding "waterlogging" of the soil. As soon as the plant is accepted, the frequency of watering can be reduced, but the soil should not dry out.
  2. It is good if, after each moistening of the root, loosening will be performed (depth 1 cm).
  3. When the height of the plant reaches 20 cm, then it must be spud; this procedure must be repeated every 10 to 12 days.
  4. Ginger loves high levels of humidity, so the plant needs to be watered daily in the early morning or evening.
  5. During the entire growing season, the root crop needs additional feeding. Immediately after planting, once every 10 days, it can be poured with a mullein (1:10), and in the second half of summer it is advisable to start applying fertilizers rich in potassium and phosphorus (potassium magnesium, superphosphate, wood ash) for the active formation of tubers.
  6. Part of the root left in the ground for the winter (only for residents of the south of the country) must be mulched and insulated, covered with agrofibre.

From our publications, you can learn not only about growing ginger in the open field, but also find a practical guide on how to do it at home, as well as learn how to plant a plant in a pot and avoid common mistakes in further caring for it.

Errors in progress

Ginger is quite whimsical: problems can arise with it if the requirements for the place where the root will grow, for the composition of the soil, for the irrigation scheme and in the absence of disinfection measures are not met. As a result of the listed factors the plant can rot, dry out or be affected by infectious diseases. To prevent this from happening, you should strictly follow all the recommendations given in the article above.

One has only to plant ginger on your site once, and you can "get sick" with this spice in a good sense of the word. Don't be afraid to experiment!
