Watering any plant plays an important role in its growth and healthy flowering. An exotic orchid flower needs proper and competent moisture, then the plant will delight its households for a long time with its flowering and healthy roots.

Features and differences of watering indoor and outdoor plants

The process of watering an orchid is very important, because the flower is capricious to care for, and growing it at home is a lot of work.

  • Orchids in nature grow in different conditions in countries with a tropical climate, where the air humidity is high enough, it is from the air that the flowers receive their nourishment, thanks to the rains.
  • Home orchids, need proper hydration of their substrate, since they do not grow in their natural environment.

You can find the secrets of watering your home and outdoor orchid here.

How to moisturize a plant so that it blooms?

Watering plants should take place during the daytime, since during a sunny day, the systems for absorbing water by the roots are activated.

It also becomes necessary to maintain humidity in the room where the orchid is located, and during the day to spray the leaves with water, that is, to create conditions close to the outdoor environment.

In the care of these exotic flowers, there is no specific hydration schedule. For those who have a wonderful orchid flower at home, you should monitor the condition of the flower, and focus on the dryness of the substratein which it grows.

If the pot is transparent, then you can determine the need for moisture both by the roots and by the condensation that accumulates on its walls.

Signs of lack of moisture

Signs that clearly indicate that the plant needs to be watered are:

  1. The soil is very dry.
  2. There are no condensation droplets inside the pot.
  3. Partial root color change:
    • if the plant is moist, then it has green roots;
    • if it needs moisturizing then grayish.

What is the right way to irrigate, what kind of water to take?

The healthy and blooming appearance of the orchid depends on what water is poured over the orchid. Water for humidification should be:

  • warm, about 30 degrees;
  • filtered;
  • soft;
  • with minimal acidity.

It is impossible to irrigate the plant from the tap; it is better to boil the water so that all salts and heavy metals in it evaporate.

And the best option would be to use rainwater to irrigate the plant.

Step-by-step instructions for watering your home

Watering an orchid at home can be done in different ways.

Immersion in water

  1. You need to boil the water and cool it down to 30-40 degrees.
  2. If you use rainwater for irrigation, then it also needs to be heated.
  3. Take a container in which you can easily put a pot with a flower, and pour prepared water into it.
  4. Place the orchid pot in this container, so that the water covers the planter to the middle.
  5. After 1-1.5 hours, remove the planter from the container, drain off excess liquid and place on a pallet.
  6. If the remaining water flows on the pallet after watering, then it must also be drained from the pallet.

    In no case should you leave water in the pan.

In the shower

  1. Take pots with plants and put them in a bath or on a tray.
  2. Turn on the shower, set the water temperature to about 40 degrees, and make a small pressure.
  3. For 5-7 minutes, water the flower under the shower, carefully without injuring the leaves and root system.
  4. After that, the water should be allowed to drain, and the droplets remaining in the sockets and on the leaves should be blotted with a napkin.
  5. Humidification in this way is carried out no more than 1 time per month.

This method of moisturizing is close to watering flowers in a natural environment, and it will need to be carried out more often than others. Such watering is carried out using a spray bottle:

  1. Pour warm water into the spray bottle.
  2. For several minutes, carefully spray the plant itself and the soil with upper roots from the device.
  3. After the watering procedure, we remove the remaining water from the leaves.
  4. Next, we remove the pot with the plant in its usual place.

Watering can method

Watering takes place with the help of a watering can, while in no case should the axils of the leaves and their growth points be touched.

  1. To water a flower from a watering can, we use warm water of 30-40 degrees, filtered in advance.
  2. Pour water into a watering can and water the orchid until water flows from the holes at the bottom of the pot.
  3. Then you should let the water drain, and the procedure will need to be repeated again.
  4. In the event that water droplets remain on the leaves and in the sockets after moistening, then they must be gently blotted with a napkin.
  5. After the end of the process, when all the water is drained from the pot, the flower can be put in place.

Moistening a potted orchid at home is described in detail here.

How can and cannot be irrigated?

In order for this wonderful flower to bloom and be healthy, it should be properly moisturized.

Proper watering of orchidsImproper watering of orchids
Using the above methods of watering orchids, allow you to maintain its health for a long time.Failure to comply with the methods and rules for moistening the soil of the plant can lead to the death of the flower.
After watering, be sure to drain the excess liquid from the pot.If this is not done, then you can achieve rotting of the roots and the death of the plant itself.
After watering, carefully remove all the water from the outlets using napkins.If you do not follow this rule, then you can easily spoil the orchid, and it will no longer be possible to restore it.
Proper watering involves watering as the soil dries, and depends on the season.It is wrong to irrigate it according to the established schedule.

How it is possible and impossible to moisten orchids and what methods of watering are and the main mistakes during irrigation are described here.

We recommend that you read articles about the rules and nuances of watering an orchid after transplanting into another pot at home, as well as about the features of moisture in winter and autumn.

Consequences of errors and their elimination

  • Excessive watering or overflowing can lead to decay and death of the plant, the roots as a result of overflow, become black and soft.

    If black roots are found, they should be removed, and the cut sites will need to be carefully treated with activated carbon.

  • Insufficient moisture is also harmful to orchids, this will lead to drying out of the soil, as a result of which the leaves will turn yellow and begin to fall off. In the event that the root system does not receive sufficient moisture, the roots become thin and fragile, and they break when touched.

    If such roots are found, they should be removed, if wounds remain, then they are treated with activated carbon.

  • After irrigation, water can remain in the rosettes of the leaves, which will lead to rotting of the base of the orchids.

    After obtaining such a result, it is practically impossible to save the plant.

It is better not to allow such cases. Watering orchids should be approached with all responsibility, because the flowering of a plant, its healthy appearance, a healthy root system directly depends on the irrigation process, on the quality of water and on the purity of irrigation (read about watering orchids during flowering here). Remember that overflowing is just as dangerous as drying out the substrate.
