Phalaenopsis is one of the varieties of orchids that are popular among flower growers due to the beauty of their flowers: an unusual shape and varied color.

At the same time, plants are considered one of the most capricious to care for. The procedure for their reproduction at home is also not easy, requiring strict adherence to the intricacies of technology. The article tells about all the methods of reproduction of this amazing plant.

Features of breeding at home

Reference. In the wild, the reproduction of these plants occurs with the help of young shoots and seeds that appeared after flowering. Their full-fledged life is facilitated by favorable conditions with a warm and humid climate.

For breeding specimens indoors, florists come up with various technologies.

The difference between this species and others

Phalaenopsis differs from other orchids in its structure. It lacks side shoots, the plant has only one point of growth and only stretches upward. Most varieties are characterized by several such points. Phalaenopsis does not have pseudobulbs, which does not give him the opportunity to reproduce with their help.

Comparison: how does a street and indoor flower reproduce?

Phalaenopsis growing on the street reproduce in only two ways:

  1. With pollen. The pollen in the seed baskets is dispersed by the wind in different areas and settles there. In addition to the wind, pollen grains are carried by all kinds of insects that flock to the flower because of its special aroma. Once on the ground, the seeds do not germinate without soil fungi, which provide them with the carbohydrates necessary for their vital activity.
  2. Through layering and shoots. These parts are formed in the plant after flowering.

Both methods work well for orchids growing on the street; natural propagation is not applicable to domestic flowers, since it gives little chance of getting a full-fledged specimen.

Methods, their description and photos

There are several ways of breeding Phalaenopsis, each of which has its own characteristics.

  1. Cuttings. In this case, the arrow of the flower is used, cutting it into separate segments, so that a dormant bud is present on each of them. After rooting, a new orchid is obtained.
  2. By dividing the bush. The principle of this technology is to divide the mother plant into 2 parts. At the same time, its top is cut off in order to root it separately, and the bottom is left to grow. In the process of growth, dormant buds come to life in the axils of the leaves and on the roots.
  3. Children. Upon awakening, the buds develop and form young orchids. They are immediately separated from the mother plant and planted in containers.
  4. Seeds. This method is not considered effective and requires sterile conditions. The resulting plant will differ from the parent specimen in the shape and color of the flowers.

Do I need to stimulate the plant?

In some cases, orchid babies are formed without outside interference. Then you just need to wait for the appearance of two pairs of young leaves. After the length of the formed air roots reaches 5 cm, carefully cut them off. If such a process is not observed, then the orchid will need stimulation, for this you need:

  1. Very carefully, so as not to damage the dormant buds, remove scales from them.
  2. Apply some cytokinin paste to the kidneys.

Important! Hormonal ointment is usually purchased at the store, and you can also make it yourself at home.

The composition contains the following components:

  • 10 mg kinetin;
  • 1 ml of water;
  • 1 g lanolin.

All elements are mixed until a homogeneous white mixture is obtained.

Often in the process of reproduction, only one lateral process is formed. In order to prevent such a situation, the flower is placed in a greenhouse with a temperature of at least +28 ° C. The orchid stays in such conditions for 5 days, after which it is treated with cytokinin paste.

How to determine that a culture is ready for division?

A change in color at the root system (from silver to green) will indicate that the orchid is ready to breed.

Training

For the reproduction of Phalaenopsis, it is permissible to use only adult specimens, who have reached 3 years of age. At this age, orchids have a developed root system and fully formed leaves. It will take 2 weeks to prepare them for breeding.

The procedure is performed in the following sequence:

  1. The plant is provided with good illumination, but so that not direct, but scattered sunlight falls on it.
  2. Watering is completely stopped, and the temperature difference is arranged in the room: during the day - + 28 ° С, at night - + 16 ° С.

Step by step instructions: how to propagate a plant at home?

Regardless of the breeding method, all instruments used must be kept clean and sterilized.

Attention! On the mother plant, all sections must be treated with an antiseptic, otherwise there is a risk of plant disease.

Cuttings

This method is considered the simplest, requiring no effort and time. The growing process consists of several steps:

  1. A lateral shoot with a length of 10-15 cm is separated from the mother plant.
  2. The planting material is laid out on a pre-moistened soil surface and covered with plastic wrap, so that it looks like a greenhouse.
  3. Periodically ventilate the greenhouse and spray the substrate.

In order for sprouts to appear from the buds, it is necessary to provide them with good lighting every day for 14 hours and maintain a temperature of +27 ° C. As a soil, you can choose sphagnum or sand.

Chopped cuttings should have at least 2 buds.

If all the rules are followed, in 2-3 weeks it will be possible to observe the first sprouts that appear.

Seeds

This breeding option is used only on rare occasions due to its complexity. According to the technology, the planting material will require the creation of an artificial nutrient medium. He will stay in it from 3 to 9 months. During germination, it is necessary to ensure sterile conditions, since it will be impossible to get rid of the fungus that has appeared.

In a room with installed containers with seeds, the air temperature must not be lower than + 20-23 ° С, and there must also be diffused light. The required duration of daylight hours in this case is 12 hours.

By dividing

Despite the fact that the method of reproduction by division is not particularly difficult, it is applicable only to an adult specimen. The cut-off part must meet two requirements:

  • content of at least 6 sheets in the outlet;
  • full development of 2-3 aerial roots.

The technology includes the following actions:

  1. With a sharp knife from the plant, cut off the upper part with 3-4 leaves and aerial roots.
  2. Places of cuts are treated with activated carbon.
  3. The separated segment is planted in the prepared substrate.

Reference. It is permissible to plant aerial roots in a separate container, but provided that their length is more than 5 cm.

Peduncle

This simple way is done as follows:

  1. at the end of the flowering of Phalaenopsis, the peduncle is removed at the very base;
  2. the separated flower shoot is divided into several parts, each of which is 3-4 cm long;
  3. the places of the cuts are treated with crushed activated carbon;
  4. cuttings are laid out in moist sphagnum and a small greenhouse is built;
  5. provide a humid climate in the greenhouse and a temperature of + 25-28 ° С;
  6. the cultivation room is periodically ventilated.

Each segment should have one dormant kidney located in the middle.

Roots

Orchid root propagation technology is quite simple and productive, for her you will need:

  1. Remove the plant that has gained strength from the pot and carefully free it from the soil.
  2. With a sterile knife, divide the rhizome so that 2-3 pseudobulbs remain on each of the parts.
  3. Treat the cut points with activated carbon.
  4. Plant each segment in a separate pot with prepared soil.
  5. Spray at least 2 times a day until full roots and green leaves appear.

Important! It is recommended to propagate Phalaenopsis by roots in spring, since such an event will require an extended daylight hours and an increased temperature. In addition, during this period, the orchid is full of vitality and juice.

Each of the breeding methods implies the use of a healthy specimen, since any deviations significantly reduce the chances of success.
